Appearances: Fashion Photography Since 1945
This study situates fashion photography within the mainstream of popular culture and connects the imagery to the art of photography itself, drawing on influential figures such as Robert Frank and Walker Evans. It also traces the rise of magazines and the influence of the leading art directors and editors of the period. The book and its accompanying exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum were prepared with the full participation of leading figures in the field, from Richard Avedon and Irving Penn to Bruce Weber. Its conclusion, in the early 1990s, was that there was no longer a distinctive form of fashion photography; there was simply photography.
